Detailed Description: BULGARIAN HOLY PLACES - A MONASTERY TOUR

7 DAYS, 6 OVERNIGHTS

1st day: Arrival in Sofia. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight accommodation.

2nd day: After breakfast - departure to Troyan Monastery. On the way - a visit to the town of Koprivshtitsa, a town-museum, where walking means a travel back in time and unforgettable experience. Beautifully decorated houses are pictorial examples of Bulgarian architecture from the Revival era. Complimentary lunch is included. Departure to Troyan, a famous craftsman 's town, situated on the banks of the river Beli Osam. A unique Troyan ceramics school can be seen in the national exhibition of art crafts in the village of Oreshak. A visit to Troyan monastery, one of the biggest Bulgarian monasteries, situated within 10 km of the town. It was founded at the end of the 16th century and is famous for its architecture, woodcarvings and incredible frescos, a work of one of the greatest Bulgarian Revival painter - Zachary Zograf. The monastery was a well-known literary centre and is famous for its miraculous icon of Virgin Mary. Dinner. Overnight accommodation.

3rd day: Breakfast. Departure to V. Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria, situated magnificently on the picturesque banks of the river Yantra. The town reached its zenith during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, when it became a political, religious and cultural centre of Bulgaria. The impressive history of the town can be felt best on the Tsarevets hill. The view of the town is formed by the buildings in typical 18th - 19th century architecture, situated in terraces on the hills around river Yantra. A walk along Samovodska Charshiya street, a live museum of crafts, involves us in the spirit of the Bulgarian Revival.

One of the most attractive Bulgarian villages - Arbanasy is visited, famous for its characteristic architectural style, well preserved houses and churches, as well as the monasteries Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas from 16th - 17th centuries. A lunch with typical cuisine dishes of the region. Free time in V. Tarnovo. After dinner - a visit to the Sound and Light show, which takes us to the old times of Bulgarian Kingdom. Overnight accommodation.

4th day: After breakfast - departure to Plovdiv. The journey crosses a region, attractive for its uniqueness, natural beauty and dozens of monasteries, which have left their marks on the spiritual history of the Bulgarian nation: Kapinovo Monastery, founded in 1272, famous for one of the most interesting art scenes of The Judgment Day; Dryanovo Monastery, founded in 13th century which played an important part as a spiritual, educational and cultural centre for more than 800 years. Lunch in the town of Tryavna, famous for its wood-carvers and icon painters. The ancient bridge, clock tower and well-preserved architecture of the houses from the Bulgarian national Revival period create a unique ambience. Our next stop at the village of Bozhentsy takes us back to the 18th century romance. Houses from the Revival period, yards deep in flowers, narrow pebbled streets as if call the time to stop. Dinner and overnight accommodation in the city of Plovdiv.

5th day: After breakfast - a walking tour around the Old town. Plovdiv was founded in the place of a prehistoric village from the second millennium BC. The old town with its picturesquely decorated houses is a real open-air museum, which creates irresistible ambience. Lunch. In the afternoon - a visit to Bachkovo monastery, founded in 1083, which size, architectural, artistic and cultural significance could be compared only to Rila monastery. Frescos, ancient icons, old printed books make it one of the richest treasures of Bulgarian Christianity. Departure to Rila monastery. Dinner. Overnight accommodation.

6th day: Breakfast. A visit to the monastery and its museum. Rila monastery was founded in 10th century by a monk - Ivan Rilsky. One of the biggest monastery complexes on the Balkan Peninsula became a centre of Bulgarian culture and enlightenment in the early Middle Ages. Icons by the most famous icon-painters from 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved there. In the monastery museum a rich collection of golden and silver coins, weapons and church objects is exhibited. Lunch. Departure to Sofia. Accommodation in a hotel. A walking tour around the architectural and historical sights of the Bulgarian capital. Sofia - one of the oldest towns in Europe, was founded more than 5 thousand years ago. A visit to St. George rotunda and Alexander Nevsky cathedral. Dinner. Overnight accommodation.

7th day: Breakfast. Transfer to Sofia airport and departure.
